CURRICULUM > SEX EDUCATION
Sex and Relationship Education takes place as part of National Curriculum requirements.
The Science programme covers reproduction in plants and animals including humans.
Pupils in Year 5 have discussions on puberty and growing up with the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, and Year 5 teacher. A DVD called ‘Growing Up’ is shown to parents prior to being shown to the Year 5 pupils. This ensures that parents are aware of what the DVD contains and feel comfortable with it being shown to their own child. Questions asked by the pupils are answered truthfully and age appropriately and at a level pertinent to the questioner whenever they arise. Questions that are considered to be going over the boundaries of home and school partnership are dealt with in a way so that the pupil understands that it is more appropriately dealt with at home with his or her parents or carers.
Parents have the right to withdraw their child from Sex and Relationship Education, but classroom discussions on family life; relationships, health care and personal safety are an integral part of the children's education.
