CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

The curriculum at St Mary Abbots is designed to deliver the aims of the National Curriculum for England 2014 and to enhance it by incorporating the school’s core Christian values and ethos into all our teaching.

Across EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), KS1 and KS2 the curriculum is designed to provide pupils with an introduction to the essential skills they need to be educated citizens. It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said; and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.

The curriculum is, however, just one element in the education of every child at the school. There is time and space within the school day, and each week, term and year to range beyond the specifications of the national curriculum and teachers at St Mary Abbots are actively encouraged to enhance the delivery of the curriculum through a huge range of educational experiences across London and visits to the school by a range of peripatetic teachers, educators, charities, businesses and private individuals.

As a school we see the curriculum as the outline of core knowledge which teachers are to build on with exciting, stimulating lessons. The lessons are designed to develop the growth of each child through the acquisition of knowledge and skills, enabling them to become the well-rounded adult citizens of tomorrow.

Each class studies a different theme in depth each term or half term and details of these can be found on our Long Term Plan alongside breadth of coverage. These themes are (where appropriate) taught either discretely or indiscreetly through the eleven curriculum subjects
