COLLECTIVE WORSHIP
In School there is a daily assembly, led by either by the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, the Vicar or members of the clergy from St Mary Abbots Church, staff members or by the pupils themselves. We celebrate the various Christian festivals such as Harvest, Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Ascension and Pentecost and learn about the influence that Christianity has on our lives. A two-year cycle of assembly themes ensures a variety of themes are covered each week which link to the Christian calendar and important aspects of the school year.
In Key Stage 2, all the pupils and staff attend St Mary Abbots Church each Thursday at 9.30 a.m. for the school Eucharist. A different class in Key Stage 2 leads the service each half term. Pupils act as ‘servers’ for the clergy and pupils are robed as acolytes and a cross bearer leads the class into place for the start of the service. The school choir sing special hymns and pieces of music during Communion. The pupils write and read the prayers in church and the apportioned scripture reading for the day. Parents and friends are warmly invited to our weekly Eucharist.
The end of term school services are also held at St Mary Abbots Church and led by the pupils or the clergy. The whole school attends the church. The services include readings, prayers, an offertory and hymns. Our school church services are always well attended by parents and friends and are a special time when we all come together to worship God. Our school choir sing specific hymns and play instrumental pieces at special services and the whole service is very unique and distinctive.
Parents have the right to withdraw their children from Religious Education and worship. In our Church School, Religious Education is such a valuable and integral part of School life that all pupils are expected to participate as much as possible.
Do come along to one of our school services – it would be lovely to meet you.
